Barnet housing allocations policy consultation

Lady reading a document
28 July 2010

Barnet Council is proposing to change the way in which housing is allocated to people in housing need. The key proposals are as follows:

  • To replace the existing points system with a banding system that prioritises the people in the highest housing need but that also recognises the valuable contribution that people who are working or volunteering make to their local community
  • To replace bidding for property with a system called assisted choice where staff helps applicants choose a property that meets an individual's needs from those that are available
  • To close the open housing waiting list/register so that we no longer accept applications from people who are not in high housing need who have little or no chance of securing housing from the council

A wide ranging consultation is now taking place with tenants, housing applicants and key stakeholders.

You are invited to give comments on the proposals and tell us what you think. You can do this by email or writing to the address below.

The closing date of the consultation is 15 October 2010.

Further details, including a summary document, will be available on Barnet Online consultations and Housing section.

The policy document is available now here.

If you would like to be sent a printed version of the proposed policy please get in touch with Chloe Horner, Housing Strategy and Business Improvement Manager, Planning, Housing and Regeneration
