Goodbye to MPA and Hello to MOPC
On 16th January 2012 the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) ceased to exist and many of the functions of the MPA
were transferred to the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPC). Here
is a message from the Greater London Authority's (GLA) website about the
MOPC.
(More information can be found on their website).
About MOPC
London is leading the way by making the Mayor responsible for
supervising the Met Police and replacing the Metropolitan Police Authority
(MPA) with the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPC).
The Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime has been set up in response
to the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act (2011) which reforms
the
accountability of police services and replaces police authorities across
England and Wales with elected individuals. The rest of the country will
elect their Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) in November 2012.
The MOPC is headed by the Mayor or, by his nomination, the appointed
statutory Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime. This means that the Mayor
is
directly accountable for policing performance in London. The MOPC makes
this process and accountability clearer and gives Londoners a further
voice
in how their city is policed.
Through the MOPC the Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be directly
accountable for police performance in the capital, setting the Met
Police’s strategic direction and allocating resources. Operational
policing will however remain the responsibility of the Metropolitan Police
Commissioner, Bernard Hogan-Howe.
The London Assembly will scrutinise the work of the MOPC through a new
body, the Police and Crime Committee (PCC).
The Police and Crime Committee (PCC)
The London Assembly Police
and Crime Committee (PCC) examines the work of the Mayor's Office for
Policing and Crime and reviews the police and crime plan for London. The
Committee can also investigate anything which it considers to be of
importance to policing and crime reduction in Greater London and make
recommendations for improvements.
All Londoners to come and find out more about the MOPC and tell us what
you think our priorities should be for crime, policing and community
safety.
You can also find out what MOPC means for you and how you can
get involved.

Hate Crime Event - It's NOT OK!
Many people with learning disabilities are verbally or physically
abused because of their disability. It can happen at home, on the street,
on public transport or at work. This is called Hate Crime.
Many people don't know what Hate crime is and who to tell about it if
it happens to them. Barnet Mencap want people to know that Hate
Crime is not OK so we are holding a Hate Crime Event for people with
learning disabilities living in Barnet. The event will be on 28th March
2012 at North London Business Park.
If you would like to attend the event please call Shelley
Gibbons at Barnet Mencap on 020 8349 3842 / or email: shelley.gibbons@barnetmencap.org.uk.
Free Regional Briefing Events for VCSE
Organisations Working on Community Safety
In 2012 major changes will come into force that will impact on
voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations involved in
community safety. In November 2012 elected Police and Crime
Commissioners (PCCs) will replace police authorities in England and Wales. The PCCs’
responsibilities will include setting local community safety priorities
and
funding community safety activity to meet the priorities. There will be
changes to existing funding and commissioning structures for Voluntary,
Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) organisations working in community
safety.
Free Regional briefing events for VCSE organisations
working on community safety are taking place across the country.
These events will explore the opportunities and challenges presented by
this new landscape and provide further information about the support
available through the Safer Future Communities project. The events are
open
to VCSE organisations working on community safety
